Welcome to the public website for the Victorian Water Register.

The Water Register is a public register of all water-related entitlements in Victoria.

The Water Register records water entitlements with integrity, enables proper water accounting, keeps track of the water market and produces crucial information for managing Victoria’s water resources.

  • An independent Victorian Water Registrar responsible for recording water shares and mortgages
  • The Office of Water in the DSE managing Victoria’s water resources
  • Rural water authorities approving the transfer of water shares and managing water allocations
On this site you can
  • Get copies of individual water share records by paying the relevant fee
  • Find out about the distribution of entitlements by water system and trading zone
  • Get information about trading rules and trades that have occurred.

This website will be continually developed and improved to provide more information about water trade and accounting. It will generate reports on levels of use, directions of trade, and prices paid.

What’s new

2 Feb 2010:

The Minister for Water has approved changes to group First Mildura Irrigation District with the Robinvale, Red Cliffs and Merbein irrigation districts for the purpose of administering the 4% limit. The Trading Rules have been updated and are available here.

12 Jan 2010:

The Minister for Water has approved rules for area-based exemptions to the 4% limit as part of the ongoing implementation of the Water for Environment Agreement. An introduction to exemptions is available here. The Trading Rules have been updated and are available here.

18 Dec 2009:

The format of the Copy of Record for water shares recorded in the Victorian Water Register has been updated. The document below explains the changes.

3 Dec 2009:

The Minister for Water has approved exemptions to the 4% limit for trade required as a condition of the Commonwealth’s Exceptional Circumstances Exit Grant. The Trading Rules have been updated and are available here.

16 Nov 2009:

The Minister for Water has recently released new, overarching Ministerial Policies for Managing Take and Use Licences. A copy of the policies can be viewed below.

21 Oct 2009:

Processing has been completed for water share applications that were held pending the removal of the 10% non water user limit which occurred on 16 September 2009. The impact of these applications is now included in the 4% trade-out limit report here.

A report on processing times for entitlement trades has been added here. It will be updated monthly in accordance with a COAG agreement on reporting performance against service standards.

Land Victoria has issued a new Customer Information Bulletin 120/2009, which contains new information about discharge of mortgages on a water share and confirming ownership of water shares in Southern Victoria.
